One of the most consistent statements that fashion makes is a statement on the condition of society. Within this statement, other statements are made. Statements about the condition of the power of feminism, about changing views of masculinity, or the conditions of the street are prevalent in the fashions of any given period. The movie Pret-a-Porter, which will be referred to hereafter as Ready to Wear (its formal name in American Film) gives one a look into the fashion industry. This essay will make use of articles that help define the nature of fashion and the world in which that nature functions. Further, this movie will be viewed as a microcosm of the relationship between fashion and the culture from which it springs. In the end, Ready to Wear (Pret-a-Porter as it is called in the fashion world), is an appropriate title for the movie in reference to both the literal clothing designed within the movie and the metaphorical double-meaning the term has in describing the characters within.
